When I was small, I wrote letters to fairies by tearing leaves just so and mailing them through slots in the house foundation. I played with invisible friends, wore my cowgirl outfit, and longed to be a trapeze artist in the circus.

My father taught me how to waltz by standing on top of his feet.  My mother taught me to sew and to love puzzles.

I was born in West Virginia, but I was mostly raised in the big blue mountains of North Carolina.

On Sundays, I drew on church programs. My art teacher was delighted the first time I created a picture from my imagination. It was a skinny Santa with a droopy hat and very long legs like Jackrabbit McCabe.

I grew up to be an artist and a folk dancer in Philadelphia and Boston. Here's a monotype print. I still love to dance!

In 2010, my family and I moved back to North Carolina and I began to write. Early in the morning, just out of my dreams, I jot down ideas on a notepad. Sometimes I'm lucky and a good first line appears, like, “This here’s the story of Jackrabbit McCabe who was born to run.”
